Five free ways to treat yourself every day

It’s the time of year when New Year’s resolutions are being made, and so often they are about personal sacrifice and a desire to change. That’s certainly an option but what if we re- spun resolutions to be positive rather than negative? What if, rather than changing ourselves we strove to be happier instead and to bring happiness to others. Here are five, totally free ways to treat yourself in day in day to life. Why not make these your new year’s resolutions?


1.      Make time for the people you love

It’s so important to make time for the people you love; whether it’s family of friends, near or far- there is nothing more crucial to your mental health or that of those around you. Even if it’s just a half an hour skype call to catch up with an old friend, make sure you have time in your day to connect with those around you. As far as possible, try to make time for people in person- such a simple thing can make you so happy in your day to day life.

 

2.      Turn your phone off

It sounds so simple, but having your phone off, even if only at the beginning and end of each day, can make a huge difference to your wellbeing. Take some time away from technology to re-connect with the people around you in a more personal way, or even just go for a walk. The constant comparisons made through social media and easy access to work bring a great deal of un- needed stress into lives. So, why not simply turn your phone off and walk away now and again?

 

3.      Think about your food

Eat food that you love, energises you and makes you feel good about yourself... but don't over think it. So many people police what they eat and shame themselves but as long as you're healthy and happy then what does it matter? Good food can bring so much joy, especially when shared so make the time to prepare and eat food you love. Take a break while you're eating and enjoy it, rather than working through lunch breaks or snacking in front of the TV. Cook food you love and take the time to enjoy it in 2018.

 

4.      Wear what you love

Don’t let others dictate your wardrobe- wear clothes that make you happy and are an expression of your personality. Life is just too short for boring clothes, drab colours and fashion 'rules.' Wear clothes that will put a smile on your face- whether that's prioritising comfort or 'over' dressing in some people's eyes. Take pleasure in what you wear, wherever you fall on the spectrum, and allow your outfits to become a fun part of your daily plans. 

 

5.      Plan something to look forward to

Make sure that you always have something to look forward to- whether it’s weekly or at the end of every month. There are little ways to spoil yourself in every day life- time with a good book, a catch up with a friend, a home cooked meal... but it's also nice to have slightly bigger things to look forward to. It doesn't need to be anything major but perhaps a long country walk, or a chance for a big baking session will help to keep you going through the week. Maybe you'd like a massage at the end of the month, or to plan a dinner party with friends. It's great to map out you're next treat so you always have something to look forward to, both in the day to day and longer term.
