How did you first get into photography?

I’ve always loved photography! Ever since I was younger and my family bought a digital camera, I’ve been obsessed with taking pictures. Then mobile photography came along and changed my life because for the first time I always had a camera with me on the go. I was able to capture moments instantly, wherever I was, and from there my passion grew until I made the decision to purchase my first DSLR camera and start my business.

What is it you love about it?

I love being able to take a picture and capture a memory that will live forever. It only takes a second but you can get so much out of it! The old phrase “a picture is worth a thousand words” is so true. You could take a thousand pictures and each one will tell you a different story and convey a different emotion. A photo can say so much with so little.

Who are your inspirations?

I don’t have any specific people who inspire me. There are so many photographers I admire and love but really any photographer can inspire me if they take an image that makes me feel something and ignites that creativity inside me. I love photographers who can take a stylish, modern picture that is also classic and timeless at the same time.

What kind of photography do you do/ enjoy the most?

As I am fairly new to the industry, I am really enjoying experiencing all different types of photography; from landscapes/portraits to commercial and events. What I love about a photoshoot in a commercial setting is you are going for one specific look and you can be really creative in finding that look - that is what I loved about the shoot I did for Label as we really wanted it to be simple, clean and to convey the positive vibe of the brand. But equally I love the spontaneity of event photography as that is where you capture those moments for people to look back on (especially when they didn’t even realise you were there!)

Tell me a little more about the business you've set up?

Matt Bester Photography is still in its early stages, we are only four months old. It’s me and my boyfriend running everything from the website/social media to enquiries and shoots. The plan is to completely immerse ourselves and explore all areas of photography to build up the profile of the business. Our aim to meet as many people as we can in the photography world and then work out where we fit in and how we can make our mark.

What are your plans for the future?

The main plan is to continue exploring all avenues and building up our portfolio of work. In the short term I have our first weddings booked in next year but I’m also keen to photograph some big events. The ultimate goal is to progress to the stage where I can do photography full time and then hopefully some day my boyfriend can join me too. But it’s not a race, we are very happy to let it build up naturally and organically. I really want to take my time and grow both as a person and a photographer.

What do you hope to achieve with your photography?

My dream is to achieve a career I love and that I am passionate about. I want my job to be something that I love doing so it never feels like work. But then equally I want to take some amazing pictures and inspire others how I’ve been inspired. I would love to expand outside of Manchester and share my work around the world. Hopefully through that I can make others feel the way I feel when I look at an image that really takes your breath away.
