Casa Lefay are a truly amazing designer company, and certainly ones to watch over the coming years. We went behind the scenes to find out more about what motivates them, and where they draw inspiration from. Take a look at their site, www.casalefay.com, and get excited to see them on the Label runway at GROUNDED: Fashion Exhibition on April 24th.
How would you describe Casa Lefay to someone knew to the brand?
Casa Lefay is about our time on Earth, the way we walk and the footprint we want to leave. After many trips living as strangers in distant lands, we decided to return to our roots in the Colombian forests where the generous Earth gives us everything we need. Casa Lefay is a brand that are committed with sustainability, art, and ethical principles as pillars for an alternative way of living. Guided by travels and multicultural traditions, Casa Lefay creates limited collections of clothes and illustrated objects. All profits are shared with environmental or humanitarian causes.
Where do you draw inspiration for your designs from?
We are inspired by nature and travels to exotic places around the world.
What message do you want to communicate to others?
We want to promote a sustainable lifestyle where our way of consumption does not have a negative impact on the land and its inhabitants. We want to recover the connection we have with nature by making visible our ability to regenerate it, we believe in the power of fashion as an agent of change considering its size and influence in the industry worldwide from an economic, social and environmental perspective.
Where do you see the brand going in the future?
In the future, we want to keep growing and reaching more and more people in the world. We expect our message to grow stronger in order to bring about a change towards sustainable development, starting with our suppliers of raw materials, continuing the generation of fair employment in the region, and ending with the delivery of a high exclusive product. Quality, manufactured ethically under environmentally friendly processes.
What have been the highs and lows of the experience so far?
We have lived the ups and downs that any venture experiences, as entrepreneurs in the fashion industry, we have found it difficult to obtain raw materials and processes that advocate for the conservation of the environment. On the other hand raising awareness about the idea that fashion has an unfriendly face in the face of natural resource management and manpower is a challenge in an undo where advertising constantly struggles to hide that reality.
However, it has been very rewarding to find different experiences and spaces that support this new form of conscious consumption, which are growing and taking force.
Do you have a favorite piece in the collection?
Each of the pieces has a correlate in the sacred plants of the Amazon, so they are all loaded with a special meaning. However, if we have to choose one, it would be a piece with Ayahuasca pattern composed by two pieces: a skirt and a very sensual crop top, evoking the natural forms of the plant.
Is there anyone who deserves particular credit as part of Casa Lefay's journey?
Our mother who has always supported us on this trip, and our grandmothers who will always be our source of inspiration.
What do you most want people to know about the brand?
Promote a sustainable lifestyle that regains our connection with nature and allows women to empower themselves as regenerative agents.
