Grace Tepper talks us through her favourite cruelty-free beauty brands, focusing on ethically tested products without compromising on quality. The Cruelty-Free Consumer’s Guide to Beauty Whether it’s at CVS or Sephora, makeup shopping is a blast. There are pretty much unlimited options and brands to choose from, an endless supply of enticing lipsticks and eyeliners, and too many eyeshadows to count. However, not all the companies that boast the best products also offer a “no animal testing” policy, so I’m always on the lookout for makeup that fits that bill. Here are some brands in all price ranges that go cruelty-free (among other benefits) and some products that they especially excel in.

Anastasia Beverly Hills

This company has a range of great products for every makeup fan, and are PETA-certified cruelty-free! ABH particularly has a cult following when it comes to their brow products, which are the best of the best. For a defined, structured brow, their DipBrow Pomade is a go-to. It’s a cream formula that comes in a cute little pot, and is best used with a brow brush. My personal favorite is the Brow Wiz: a thin, pointed brow pencil that’s great for everything from filling in bare spots to creating that killer bold brow. It has a spoolie on the other end which is great for blending, and lasts all day long!

W3LL People

Not as W3LL-known as some other brands, W3LL People is not only cruelty-free, but also a pioneer in products with all-natural ingredients, with no fillers or petroleum by-products. Its mission is to make uber-hydrating, healthy makeup for that perfect natural look. One of W3LL People’s best products is their Bio Brightener Stick - a creamy highlighter that has a gorgeous shine and weightless feel. The best part? Not only is it hypoallergenic, cruelty-free, non comedogenic, and chemical free, but it also contains organic green tea and aloe to help that natural shine even after you take this highlighter off.

Kat Von D Beauty

Kat Von D originally came on the scene with amazing lipsticks and the perfect bold red. That’s what this brand is all about, bold and beautiful products for all girls and boys to unapologetically rock. And not only is it cruelty-free, but it has a vegan line as well! The range of items Kat Von D offers that are safe and ethical is endless. Although you can never go wrong with their Studded Kiss Lipstick in every color under the sun, Kat Von D’s secret miracle-worker is their Tattoo Liner. Brush-tipped and equipped for the finest of lines (and part of the vegan collection), this liner is waterproof and built for 24-hour wear. It doesn’t go anywhere and is so easy to use, so you can’t go wrong.

Wet ‘N Wild

Who says ethical and affordable can’t go together? Drugstore favorite Wet ‘N Wild has great products for insanely cheap prices, and still doesn’t test on animals. Their MegaLast Nail Color comes in lots of trendy colors and is built to last. It also contains calcium and minerals to prevent nail discoloration and weakening that can be caused when using lots of other formulas, so it’s a great line to check out. Also exceptional from Wet ‘N Wild are their lipsticks and eyeshadows, which are both amazing quality for their prices, and are so cheap that you can splurge on a bunch of different colors!

Urban Decay

Urban Decay is an all-round well-respected, high-quality brand, and their cruelty-free claims have PETA’s stamp of approval. Although it’s the priciest of the five companies, I haven’t found a UD product I haven’t liked. From their legendary eyeshadow palettes to their creamy lipsticks, they know makeup like no one else. My favorite UD product is their Naked Skin Liquid Foundation. It glides on very easily and provides buildable coverage while always staying lightweight. You’ll forget you’re wearing foundation with this one, and it stays on all day while matching any skin tone perfectly. Not to mention that it’s vegan, as so many of the UD products are.
