When you're out in a big city looking to grab a meal, it can be hard to find restaurants that accommodate vegetarian and vegan diets. So next time you find yourself in Edinburgh, why not try one of these fabulous vegan-friendly food joints? Jody Brimacombe's pictures and descriptions are mouthwatering.

Scotland may be known for its black pudding and haggis, but Edinburgh is a hub for trendy, plant-based dining. Whether you’re craving porridge with a chocolate-raspberry brownie, Thai food, sushi, or just some messy wings, Edinburgh has a vegan version that will blow your mind. Hungry yet? Same. These are the top vegan-friendly Edinburgh cafes that you should add to your bucketlist ASAP.

This wee little café is conveniently located across from Haymarket station, so it’s an easy place to grab a bite to eat before exploring Edinburgh’s attractions and secret sights. It doesn’t get much more Millennial than Grams. Grams boasts an acai bowl, a cacao smoothie bowl, and – of course – gourmet avocado toast.

2. Chaophraya

This rooftop Thai restaurant offers up the best views in the city. Chaophraya is the perfect place to enjoy a tofu panang curry, some vegetable spring rolls, and a glass of wine on a sunny day. Make sure to book in advance, as the restaurant fills up quickly.

3. Brochan

It doesn’t get more hip than this snug little porridge café tucked away near the Meadows. Brochan’s organic oats are cooked with coconut milk, and then served with your choice of artisanal toppings. Make sure to try the berry chocolate porridge, which features a chocolate raspberry brownie, almonds, and seasonal berries.

4. David Bann

This all-vegetarian restaurant is on the pricier side of things, but David Bann is worth splurging for. Don’t miss out on the homemade hummus served with bread made in-house, or the spicy chilli served with chocolate sauce (hey, don’t knock it ‘til you try it!). Did I mention that there’s coconut and whisky sorbet for dessert? Yup, I’m drooling too.

5. Land of Bourbon

This hidden gem serves up some of the best vegan street food in Scotland. Land of Bourbon operates out of an ex-police box near Edinburgh University, and it’s a favourite amongst local students. The food is Afro-Caribbean inspired; try the cauliflower buffalo wings, or opt for the okra fries. The exotic flavours will blow your mind, guaranteed.

6. Pumpkin Brown

The café uses only organic ingredients, and the innovative menu boasts a blueberry muffin chia pot, lentil dhal, and a red velvet latte made with beetroot. Don’t forget to try one of their famous raw vegan cakes.

This list of vegan-friendly Edinburgh cafes is certainly not exhaustive. Plantbased eaters should also try the Herbivore Kitchen for out-of-this-world pancakes, or Considerit Chocolate for vegan doughnuts that taste better than the real deal.
