Making Difficult Decisions and Learning to Trust Yourself

Katherine Barbara Montana gives us her personal insight into making life-altering decisions. She highlights the fundamental importance of listening to yourself intuitively.

We make decisions every day, from whether to snooze our alarm one more time to what to order for dinner. Clearly though, some decisions we have to face are much bigger than these, and thus have a greater impact on our own lives and the lives of those around us.

If you’re like me, big decisions are a burden. I consider every possible consequence and outcome when making one, and honestly, it really stresses me out. As I got older, I had to make even bigger decisions, such as what career path to go down. In order to relieve some of this stress, I decided that I needed to learn how to further trust myself when making big decisions such as these.

We have all been conflicted about certain decisions. Sometimes it seems like there is no right answer, and you feel stuck between a rock and a hard place. I have found that going into a quiet room and simply listening to yourself can relieve some of this pressure. What is your gut telling you? I have found that usually, it’s right.

Listening to your heart is helpful in making difficult decisions. A good trick is to imagine how you would feel after choosing the different options a decision offers. For example, would choosing one option make you feel guilty, nervous, or scared? If this is so, this likely isn’t the right decision for you. Imagining yourself making decisions can be a great tool to discover the best option for yourself, and thus, trusting yourself and your gut becomes even easier.

Learning to listen to yourself is extremely important, but research is also key. Asking others about the possible outcomes of a big decision is extremely helpful, and can also relieve some pressure off of the decision. The old saying, “A problem shared is a problem halved” is very true. Your trusted friends and family want you to succeed and do well, so don’t feel scared or embarrassed about asking for advice. Through support and advice, you can feel confident in yourself and your decisions.

By learning to trust in yourself, big decisions and changes in life bring about less stress and pressure. Change is scary, but sometimes it is necessary to fully blossom and further succeed. Being able to trust in yourself and your decisions can ultimately bring about more success and a more positive mindset.
