Pineapple is the New Leather

Gabi Bouvier introduces us to a truly sustainable alternative for leather. This vegan secret looks and feels stylish but isn’t guilty of animal cruelty in any way. Take a look as to where you can find it ⬇️

Whenever people talk about fashion products that look like they are made from leather, but aren’t, it seems to fall under the umbrella term of “faux leather.” (Fun fact: when I was younger, I thought “faux” was just another animal breed whose skin was used to make leather.) And if you buy faux leather products rather than real leather, you tend to be lauded as animal friendly.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s awesome when someone buys faux leather rather than real leather, but recently I’ve been doing more research into what materials are actually used, which led to my discovery of Piñatex! The vegan leather alternative made from…pineapple leaves?

Piñatex is a sustainable textile created by the company, Ananas Anam from pineapple leaves fibres. Pineapple leaves are a by-product of pineapples that would normally be thrown away. By creating Piñatex, Ananas Anam is essentially reducing waste while creating a great product that doesn’t require any extra cultivating. Even better, this provides additional income to farmers harvesting pineapples.

Po-ZuNae, and Bourgeois Boheme, all footwear companies, and Maravillas Bags, are a few companies that currently utilize Piñatex.
